To Gut Your Animal Or To Not Gut Your Animal

To Gut Your Animal Or To Not Gut Your Animal

Up until about 5 years ago I was gutting every big game that I was harvesting every year. I’d do the same procedure every time I’d start at the bottom of the stomach and cut my way up the ponch then I’d do the nasty deed of removing the anal intestine and everything down in that area. Boy that was something that I never looked forward to every year.

It wasn’t until I went hunting with a great friend of mine and he asked me what I was doing as I proceeded to open up the ponch. I told him I was gutting this deer, he started laughing at me and said “I’ll teach you a ten times easier way that’s less nasty and much faster.” He then proceeded to quarter out my deer and was finished in less then 15 minutes flat. I stood there amazed because not only did he quarter that deer out super fast he had almost no blood, gut juice, stomach goo or anything else you get on you when you gut a big game animal. I was sold after that and have never gutted another big animal after that day.

Last year after my father killed his big 6 point elk, we sat there arguing over whether we should gut it and come back tomorrow or hurry and quarter it out before we leave. It was getting dark fast so as you can imagine the argument got heated. I won the argument and ended up quarting him and coming back the next day. It did take a little longer than normal because of the size of the elk but it was definitely less stinky and dirty than gutting the elk.

Whose to say what’s the best method sometimes it depends on where you kill the animal and the size of the animal. If you kill a big animal 5 miles in the back country obviously it’s a no brainer but if you’re lucky enough to be able to get your truck or 4 wheeler up to it then why not take it out whole. I’ve never been lucky enough to able to just back my truck up to the animal.

Both ways have their pros and cons and it just comes down to personal preference or the location of the animal. Something to think this hunting season as you’re about ready to take the knife to your animal.

Be safe and good hunting to everyone!

Tips To Relieve Joint Pain In Animal

Joint pain in animal can be caused by many factors such as joint trauma, arthritis, a degenerative joint disease or a genetic disorder. This will cause pain when that animal moves. You will find that he/she will walk stiffly and he/she may limp. Thus, you should consult your veterinarian when you find some signs of this pain. But, there are some tips that you can do when you want to help your pet to relief his/her pain temporarily before taking him/her to the veterinarian.

Warm up the stiff joint of your pet with hot-water bottle to ease the discomfort in his joint. This is the correct thing to do if your pet suffers a genetic disorder or arthritis such as hip dysplasia. Additionally, you would better take your pet inside the house and allow him/her to sleep inside during cold weather. This is because cold weather often make the pain worse.

Take your pet to have exercise lightly. You can take your pet when you are doing your exercise such as walking and running. This will strengthen his/her muscles and loosen up the stiff tendons. If you have a dog with dysplasia, you should available a leash to prevent him from running and jumping that will make his/her joint feels worse. You will find that instead of walking and running, you can take your dog to swim. This is an activity that your dog might like.

Do a massage in the area that is in pain. In this case, you can use your fingertips to massage the skin and muscles in the joint area. But, you have to make sure that your pet feels comfort with this condition. Do it for 10-15 minutes.

Feed your pet with diet menu. You will find that the excess of weight will make his joint hurts because there is pressure on the tender of the joint. Make sure that the pet food that you choose has lower percentage of fat. Additionally, you have to make sure that you always feed your pet with food that contains carbohydrates with low fat.

Those are some tips you should consider if you want to relieve animal joint pain. But, if you are in doubt to do those things yourself, you should take him/her to the veterinarian immediately.

Tips On Treating Animal Bites

If you are bitten by any animal, be it a pet or a wild one, you need to take necessary precautions to prevent any form of infection or disease.

- Home Remedial Measures

Thoroughly wash the wound with cold water, once you get the bleeding under control, remove the saliva from the bitten animal by washing the wound with soap and water. Do this for five minutes.

Once the wounds are cleaned, apply a bandage over the infection with a sterile gauze pad.

To prevent swelling apply ice pack over the wound. For pain relief take pain killers. Do not give these to children, as it may lead to further complications.

For any animal bite, apply a mixture of castor oil and lime juice. Simultaneously you can have one glass of warm water mixed with honey and lime juice to alleviate pain.

Take vitamin C in the form of fresh vegetables and fruits. Juices of these vegetables and fruits are easily digested and they have the capability to fight infection, an important property while tackling animal bites.

Intake of vitamin B supplements produces antibodies that fight infection.

Use herbs like Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea), Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis ), Comfrey (Symphytum officinalis ), Calendula (Calendula officinalis ) and Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous ) in tincture form for a five day treatment. Recommended dosage is 1 drop per pound body weight of each, either orally using a syringe or directly on to your tongue.

The puncture wounds of cats tend to heal from outside which can lead to abscesses. To avoid such problems take extra care to keep the wound open. You can wash the wound with saline solution, later add half or one drop of Calendula (Calendula officinalis) to the solution for the same purpose till it is completely healed. For internal problems have one drop of Calendula (Calendula officinalis) per 10 pound bodyweight for the external healing process.

Goldenseal tea works great as an antibiotic. It can also be applied directly on the bitten area for the benefits of its natural antibiotic properties. Avoid using it during pregnancy or if there is a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes or glaucoma. Seeking proper guidance prior to use is advised.

You can also apply antibiotic ointment to the bitten area twice daily, till it’ s completely healed.

Tips for Choosing a Terrarium Animal

An animal terrarium, also called a vivarium, is a wonderful way to blend the satisfaction of having a small pet with the aesthetic beauty of a terrarium. This article will help you choose which type of animal is right for your terrarium.
There are some quick rules of thumb you should consider before you build your terrarium. The first rule is that the animal comes first. Everything should be designed for the comfort and happiness of the animal. Some of these considerations will concern humidity, types of plants, amount of water, and whether the cage should be fully enclosed.
The second biggest consideration is toxicity. Because you are going to have plants and soil you may be using some kind of fertilizer. Never use chemical fertilizers; stick with all natural fertilizers. And when cleaning your tank never use toxic cleaners. I recommend you use simple green or another type of non-toxic cleaner.
Two more things to consider are the size of the animal and its behavior toward other animals. Only choose a pet that is small and will stay small. And never mix pets that will eat each other.
If you are an absolute beginner to pets and to terrariums I recommend you start with field crickets as your pet. They are very hardy, easy to maintain, easy to feed, and are quite fun to watch. They make an excellent first pet. Of course, if you upgrade to another type of pet you may have to remove the crickets because many of the pets suitable for a vivarium will deem crickets to be food.
There are two basic types of animal terrariums: Dry and wet. This is self-explanatory but it is important to note that dry terrariums are much easier to maintain so if you are a beginner to this hobby you should probably stick with them. And remember that dry doesnt mean no water at all. You should always keep a small dish of water in the terrarium as a minimum regardless of what type of pet you are keeping.
Some of the pets that are suitable for a dry terrarium include:
A Wet Vivarium can be an environment that has a portion of the bottom filled with water or be an aquarium tank where the complete bottom is filled to a depth of several inches. This does add the challenge of making sure you have clean water and even a filtration system. Some pets, such as tadpoles, absolutely require large amounts of filtered water for their well being. This type of terrarium is much more of a challenge than the dry type and you should tackle this kind only after having successfully kept a dry one for a period of time.
Some common and easy to care for wet pets are:
So Which Pet should you choose? I recommend that if you are a beginner to vivariums you choose a pet from the dry list (because they are easier to maintain). Research the requirements of the pet you have chosen and build your terrarium accordingly. If you are looking for a bigger challenge, have a bit of skill, or want a more dramatic terrarium then choose something from the wet pet list. If you follow these simple steps you will build yourself a nice little animal enclosure that will keep your animal happy and bring you lots of fun in observing it and caring for it.

There Is Great Satisfaction In Animal Portraiture

Considering portrait painters, pleasing the beholder is their challenge as well as being able to fix a typical posture on a canvas and other details that capture the subject and brings it to life even if it needs the tiniest of brush strokes. There is a female portraitist who is able to bring her subjects to life according to her clients. Although the faces in her portfolio are not human ones even if they are relaxed, alert, aristocratic, moody, sensitive, and happy. For more information on paintings check out photo into painting.

When it comes to her specialization, she paints portraits of cats, dogs, and horses but she would like to try her skills in painting any kind of animal. In a studio in her home in the Maplewood section of the borough is where this tall and slender woman does her work. It was five years ago when she thought about combining her love for art and animals.

In the past, she only painted the heads of the animals but nowadays she paints them in their entirety and her newest project is that of a horse running across a field. When it comes to making two or more of them, even if the typical portrait is of a single animal, they make for interesting compositions. Most of her customers learn about her from others whose animals she has painted, and some people ask her to paint more than one of their pets.

One woman commissioned a portrait of each of her three wolfhounds. Similar to people, there are differences here. What she takes along to dog and horse shows are her business cards, camera, and portfolio. She explains that the knowledgeable use of a camera is essential in animal portraiture, because this is one model that isn’t about to hold still and pose. What she does is shoot one or two rolls of film for each subject and then paints using these pictures. If possible, she would like to handle the animal aside from spending time with it in order to see the true color of its coat and to perceive its character. If you like this article on paintings visit canvas oil painting hand painted for more education.

What she also likes to see is how the owner and the animal interact with one another. After she combines her view of the animal and theirs, she tries to capture it as closely as possible. In the portrait, the expression in its eyes is a key feature that conveys the personality of the animal and presenting the conformation of the animal correctly is also necessary.

There are times when conformation is vital especially with show animals. Other than having to know a lot of animals you should also be familiar with what conformation works. So much can be gained from something like animal portraiture. The reason why he was not able to stop chuckling and shaking his head at the unveiling was because he was pleased.

Some people choose to order them and gift them to animal lovers and there are some who commission portraits of their own beloved pets. What the portraits serve to become after the animal has died is to be kept as a special keepsake as experts say. In the past she has been able to paint the portrait of a deceased pet considering how photographs alone can be used by artists in creating these portraits considering that the pictures are good.

What she uses are pastels, oils, and pencil. Focusing on one project at a given time is what she does. She tries not to give specific time frame because it’s not good for an artist to work under pressure. In any given month, she works on one or two portraits. After being able to finish a painting she takes a break because she knows that painting can take a toll on the painter and considering how she tries to paint everyday she gives herself a break during the weekends.

The Yak All-Purpose Animal

Yaks are synonymous with life at high altitudes. They are strong creatures capable of carrying heavy loads, but more than this, they are the ultimate all-purpose beasts of burden. In Nepal, you are likely to encounter them on the Everest Base Camp Trek where they are used as pack animals on the trail. They are easy to spot: they can be two metres tall at the shoulder and up to a metric tonne in weight, looking like the cow equivalent of a hairy mammoth, or perhaps a buffalo with a Beatles’ mop-top haircut.
The herds of yaks you will see in Nepal are domesticated and have bells around their necks. As they are herded down the Everest Base Camp Trek trail, they fill the mountainside with a distinct enchanting sound. What is less enchanting is when a herd of sturdy yaks blocks your passage on an Everest trek; you will probably have to step aside, deferring to their massive horns.
A Yak by Any Other Name
In English, the word yak (which is worth eight points in Scrabble) is used to refer to the whole of the species; however, to a native of the Everest region of Nepal the term ‘yak’ only means the male animal, with the word ‘dri’ or ‘nak’ referring to a female.
Although you may see the domesticated variety, Bos grunniens, while Everest trekking, the wild Yak, Bos mutus, is considered extinct in Nepal and Bhutan. Yaks are quite closely related to the African buffalo, the American bison, and the European bison, except they are adapted to living between 4,000 and 6,000 metres above sea level. They can still be found at these altitudes in Tibet, and there are some isolated populations in China, too.
The type of yak you are most likely to see at the start of an Everest Base Camp Trek is a hybrid: half yak, half cow. Locally, these are called Dzo (male) and Dzomo (female). They are smaller than yaks, and their shorter hair means they are better at handling warmer climates at lower altitudes. As you ascend on your Everest trek, you will notice that Yaks replace their hybrid cousins as they are extremely well adapted to higher altitudes. As well as having a higher concentration of red blood cells, they even have an extra pair of ribs to accommodate their larger sized lungs.
Food & Fuel
Of course, apart from a form of transport, another use for the yak is for food. Yak meat is high in protein, containing only one sixth of the fat of beef, and makes a fine Everest trekking meal when served with noodles. Nothing of the yak is wasted in Nepal; the horns are used as cutting implements, and even the head of the yak is sometimes served for dinner, especially as part of New Year celebrations.
The yaks themselves eat grass, and often have to burrow through several feet of snow to reach their food. They have learned to eat snow when they are thirsty and unfrozen water cannot be found.
Yak milk (or rather, dri milk) is full of goodness, with twice the fat of cow’s milk. It is yellowy in colour and is mostly used for butter and yogurt. These make good energy foods to keep you fuelled-up for your Everest Base Camp Trek. It is so fat-rich that it can also be burned as lamp oil.
You’ll eat the majority of your meals along the Everest Base Camp Trek at Nepalese tea houses. These provide convenient rest stops where trekkers can put their feet up, eat, sleep and acclimatize to the mountain environment.
Some of the tea houses will cook meals over a traditional yak dung stove. Although you may shudder to think of your food being so close to manure, this is in fact a brilliant, environmentally friendly way of cooking. Trees are sparse in Nepal and considered too important to burn, and so the dung of yak is dried and used as a convenient source of renewable fuel.
Hairy Bovines
The other way yaks can provide warmth is with their fur. Yak fur can grow to as much as two feet long, and might be used for clothing along with yak wool, and can also be made into ropes and sacking. It is even used to make hairy tents. The yak fur allows smoke from inside the tent to escape, while the oil in the fur keeps water from penetrating inside.
When you add up all the benefits that this local beast can offer, from transport, baggage, shelter, clothing, tools, food, drink, and fuel for heating and lighting, I am sure that you will agree that on your Everest base camp trek, the yak is more useful than a Swiss Army Knife – by far!

The Unlikely Favorite Animal

The human race has always had a fascination with animals. We love them and most of us are no exception. A love of various kinds of animals from dogs to tigers can be found across the planet. One of the most intelligent animals on the planet is the dolphin. These unique animals have been regarded highly by humans for many centuries. The ancient Greeks believed that if dolphins were seen around a ship while they were leaving on a journey, then it was considered a good luck charm. This is just one of the many references in history to these unique mammals that interact with humans in a way that is unique only to them. However, some people have animal preferences that cannot be cuddled. In fact some may never be able to touch their favorite animal at all. Thanks in part to wildlife refugees and places such as Sea World people can come in contact with their favorite animals on a daily basis. For example, for those who love dolphins, they can actually feel these incredible animals at the dolphin tank at Sea World. Loving a dolphin may be hard to understand, but dolphins hold a mystique that is all their own. They are the protectors in the sea, and being in love with this creature can make one have a life long love affair with the dolphins.
So how you ask can a dolphin be a favorite animal? Well, many reasons really. For one, they are extremely playful in both the wild and in captivity. In a world that is chaotic and rarely full of play, dolphins add a charm to that only they can do. They are very friendly to humans even when they are encountered in the wild. If you have ever visited beeches where dolphins swim close to, then you may understand how a dolphin may be considered playful. They play off of the beach and can even come in contact with those who are swimming in the ocean.
Those who love dolphins usually keep them close in many ways even if they do not live on the beach. Unlike a dog or a cat that cuddles with you on a consistent basis, dolphins cannot do this. So, people fill their homes with many reminders that give one a sense of being with their dolphin friends. For example, one can find dolphin jewelry to adorn themselves with or they can also have a variety of ceramic sculptures of these magnificent creatures as decoration in their home.
Anyone can collect dolphin items. Because dolphins are so popular all over the world, the market is filled with wonderful items that can be collected. Everything you can imagine is available. For example, if you love sculpture, then you can find unique coffee tables that have multiple dolphins crafted in a playful gesture as their base. Many think that dolphin art is tacky, but if you look hard enough, you can find great pieces that do not look like dime store art.

The Shocking Truth About Your County Animal Shelter

If any pet is lost or homeless, the County Shelter may not be the safe haven for animals that Taxpayers think it is.

NOTE: Microchipping (and the up-to-date registration of that Microchip) along with the usual collar/tag ID can expedite a lost pets release from the County Shelter and ensure a beloved pets safe return to its home. Common protocol in Shelters is to scan any new pet for a microchip along with tracking any ID tag information for its Guardian.

There IS a proven solution to the harsh realities listed below, that every County Animal Shelter can quickly implement if they choose. Taxpayer awareness may mean the difference between a homeless animals second chance for a Forever Home or their Death Walk in a County Animal Shelter.

Most Communities have a County Funded (Taxpayer Funded) Animal Shelter which is referred to as an Open Admission Animal Shelter which will accept any unwanted/stray animal from the community. Smaller, rural counties may not have such a shelter.

The intent by most Animal Loving Taxpayers is that the monies spent on the County Animal Shelter ensures the community has a safe haven for stray/unwanted animals to go to when homeless, which will also protect the community from stray animals roaming and multiplying in the neighborhoods and the risk of Rabies from a sick animal.

Many of the Open Admission Shelters only accept dogs (no cats). Unbelievably, in July 2009, there are dog only rural county shelters that have been known to actually suggest to the person bringing in friendly stray cats, Take them home and shoot them.

Although most shelter directors are doing their job and trying to save the animals in the process, there are county funded shelter directors that view their job as removing from the community unwanted/unclaimed animals much the same way the trash collector removes the communitys trash, simply dispose of/kill the unwanted animals.

Other shelter directors have been in the hopelessness mentality of so many unwanted animals and so few adopters so long, that they are not staying proactive and searching for better answers than the traditional Save Some, Kill the Rest mentality.

Most county funded shelters have adopted the euthanasia / killing method by injection although some county shelters still use the horrific Gas Chamber, because the personnel dont want to be so close to an animal to kill it, although the Gas Chamber has long been recognized as a cruel and agonizing means to end the life of animals. Equally disturbing is the fact that some county shelters still shoot the animals to humanely kill them.

Mandated Stray Holding Periods (legally mandated for dogs only, cats can be disposed of immediately if that is the shelter policy) can have the family pet hurt (no vet attention in many shelters) and languishing for days until their holding period is up and then the fate turns to death if unclaimed or deemed unadoptable.

What can the taxpayers in each community do to address these dismal facts playing out for millions of unwanted cats and dogs in the United States in the County Animal Shelters?

First, each taxpayer needs to understand the current status of their County Animal Shelter:
Does the county have a County Animal Shelter?
Does it accept dogs and cats, what are their policies on how long to keep an animal prior to killing it?
Obtain from the County Shelter at least the last full years Animal Report which contains how many animals were claimed, adopted and euthanized/killed. Receiving numerous previous years statistics will give a clear view of how proactive the shelter personnel is on saving lives.

There is a proven solution which will require acceptance of new policies, commitment and dedication from the shelter personnel to the homeless animals. Each Taxpayer needs to insist their monies are being spent on shelters that actually save lives versus just killing the animals. With just a small list of select programs (e.g.: Trap Neuter Release, Foster, Rescues, Adoptions) in place, the county shelters can become the Second Chance at a Forever Home versus the Death Walk.

The Progress Of Animal Behaviour Courses In Puppy Training

Taking on a canine is also being prepared to supply education. You will find varieties of strategies to conduct pet dog training. In fact, you will discover as quite a few dog-training methods as there are puppy trainers. Every will not agree on education approaches and specifics. Consist of the D I Y teaching that a lot of pet dog owners do along with the methods are multiplied. All dog-training methods, no matter the methods applied fall in essence into two categories, the constructive encouragement, and the negative encouragement.

Constructive reinforcement is usually a quite old philosophy based on the premise that reinforcing good conduct is a lot more pleasant to each the pet dog as well as the proprietor aside from not resulting into developing undesirable characteristics within the doggy. Optimistic encouragement creates trust. It creates a structure for far more definitive habits rewarded when pleasant responses are achieved. It motivates canines to obey more readily and a lot more eager to study. The final results of positive reinforcement are more permanent and lessen aggressive conduct. For each people and animals, chemicals are released from the brain creating nice associations when positive reinforcement is utilised. Generally, constructive encouragement is rewarding a doggy whether by food, by a hug and embrace, and by play.

Around the other hand, damaging reinforcement is an older method that fundamentally makes use of punishment according to the notion that the canine will bear in mind much better what it isn’t supposed to do when it will be potentially be harmed as a result. Negative encouragement uses yelling, choke chains, confinement, direct harm, electric shock, and electric fences. Adverse encouragement has its appropriate employs. For essentially the most part though, unfavorable reinforcement final results to either concern or aggressiveness, as all beneficial animal behaviour courses will tell you.

Dogs for essentially the most element are treated like members with the family. They provide semblances of really like and are loved in return, they trust and are trusted, and they’re loyal. Mainly because of these qualities, the popularity of good reinforcement in dog teaching grew, 1 from the reasons is that it really is never nice to have an animal from the house that only obey dependant on dread. The canine need to concern its proprietor from time to time, but mostly it does not produce very strong bonds. It truly is frequently far more recommended to create that bond out of mutual really like, not worry.

Recent researches by animal behaviorists also showed that animals don’t genuinely understand a lot from damaging treatments. It obeys true but generally, only to the extent that it’s avoiding the discomfort that benefits. An additional danger to unfavorable reinforcement is that once the puppy proprietor starts using pain as a deterrent for poor behavior, the temptation to resort to harm generally gets stronger specifically when the doggy refuses as canines do from time to time. It also makes the doggy a lot more melancholic and lethargic.

You will find distinct pet dog kind and breeds. Different canines respond differently. While patience in dog training is usually a should, constructive encouragement doesn’t completely undermines the damaging. Sometimes, damaging reinforcement has to be used. If ever a detrimental reinforcement is needed the ratio of use is about 99:1 where you apply 99% of good encouragement in teaching the canine.
